UPDATE CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTIONS FROM COMMISSIONER OF PUBLIC WORKS
Paul,
The DPW is behind in the tree collection program as a result of the snow falls.  We will continue to collect trees as the weather permits.  Many may now be buried and or frozen into the snow and as a result will not be collected until the snow melts and the trees are again accessible.

Commissioner of Public Works

STUDENT NEWS NETWORK –STUDENTS TO HAVE THEIR OWN PUBLIC ACCESS TV NEWS PROGRAM..
I was very pleased with the response at our first SNN meeting. About 50 students have expressed interest in  joining SNN—reporting the news, commenting on issues.  Our follow up meeting will take place Monday at 4:15 PM to 5:15 PM at Greenburgh Town Hall.
At the meeting on Monday we will hear from Mo KrochmalHope to see you Monday at 4:15 PM
Mo Krochmal, a long-time new media journalist and an educator, will discuss creating a platform using free or open-source tools to enable students and young people to perform responsible journalism through multimedia storytelling to share stories about their communities.

As the first digital journalism professor at Hofstra University (2007-2010), Krochmal designed and created the NassauNewsLive.com platform that enabled a small core of journalism students to manage a staff of 100 of their fellow students in producing state-of-the-art student-run community coverage on a real-time basis -- with a minimal budget. Students used smart phones.

Comments on Draft PSC Recommendations for Changes in TVMP Are Due Feb.
2nd (this is from Mark Gilliland of the LORAX group)

The NYS Department of Public Service staff has made a series of seven recommendations for changes in utility transmission vegetation management programs after reviewing  the written input and public hearing testimony collected around the state during the last year.
Many of the recommended changes are specific to O&R and Con Edison (due to the excess of problems and issue reported in the NY Metro region compared to state-wide), while others apply to all NYS PSC- regulated transmission utilities: Read the detailed in the PSC notice attached (below) as PDF.

The PSC is inviting comments from the public on these recommendations, before they hold formal Commission hearings to discuss these recommendations and make their decisions/findings on Case 10-E-0155.
Comments are due by Feb 2.

The GEF LORAX Working Group strongly urges local property owners, municipal officials and other elected officials to review these recommendations and provide feedback directly to the PSC (contact details within the attached announcement). We believe that the draft guidelines do not go far enough, ignoring the need for mitigation for existing problems, and ultimately will prove insufficient to prevent a recurrence of the same widespread issues experienced previously along the ROWs in Westchester, Rockland and Orange Counties (and elsewhere in the state).

Please speak up and ensure your voice continues to be heard in this important process.

Escape Winter’s Chill With a Trip to the Tropics Without Leaving New York. Experience Caribbean Garden, a New Look at the Botanical Garden’s. Permanent Collection and a Warm Ecotour of the World. Admission is Half Price. Visitors to The New York Botanical Garden this winter can find a refuge from the frigid weather outside with a retreat to the warmth of Caribbean Garden, a look at the tropical trees, flowers, and foliage in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory’s permanent collection, including orange-yellow crotons, fuschia bromeliads, and rosy red hibiscus. Through self-guided strolls, use of free audio tours, or participation in docent-led tours of the Conservatory, visitors can encounter many surprises in the largest Victorian-style glasshouse in the country, open once again to the public after last summer’s horticultural and structural refurbishments. Harsh winter frost gives way to warm rain forest mists, soaring palm trees, and bright desert landscapes. This ecotour also allows discovery of aquatics, medicinal plants, unusual species, and the process of evolutionary change. The period between the Botanical Garden’s major seasonal shows, when the climate in the Conservatory is inviting, when the crowds are thinner, and when the admission price is discounted, is an ideal time for visitors to fully immerse themselves in and take advantage of these rich collections. Botanical Garden photography instructors will be available every Saturday during Caribbean Garden to share tips and techniques about how to capture the beauty of nature like a pro.
