Hurricane Irene alert #2
Release Date: August 26, 2011

I received the following advisory from the Police Chief. I will be posting frequent hurricane updates on the town website and will send the e alerts to those who subscribe to our e mail system.
Feel free to call me on my cell: 438 1343, at home: 478-1219 or at the office: 993-1545 anytime. Or--you can e mail me. I always look at my blackberry and respond! When the heavy rains start - stay home. Trees can fall. About a year ago a man was visiting his daughter and a tree fell on his car--he lost his life.
PAUL FEINER

Currently the town of Greenburgh and the entire tri state area is under a hurricane watch due to the impending arrival of hurricane Irene. Town departments have been meeting to develop response plans to insure adequate personnel and equipment are available. The hurricane has been predicted to arrive in this area sometime Sunday afternoon. The town’s Emergency Operations Center will be activated sometime on Sunday depending on the arrival time of this storm. Residents are urged to prepare for a possible hurricane as well. It is suggested that all residents should be prepared by having on hand a 3-day supply of water, food, battery operated AM/FM radio, and a flashlight.
The main concerns of this event will be high winds, rain, and flooding in previous flood prone areas such as the Saw Mill River corridor. The high winds usually result in falling trees causing downed power lines and power outages.
Residents are urged to cancel any social events or travel on Sunday and possibly Monday.
Citizens can be more prepared by:
   • Staying home
   • Having an emergency preparedness kit.
   • Staying tuned to local TV and Radio Stations (WFAS 1230 FM) and listening for instructions.
   • Having a personal or family plan to shelter-in-place or evacuate.
   • Battening down any loose items and securing property as best as possible during heavy winds. This would include patio furniture, umbrellas, trash receptacles and flags.
   • Clearing outdoor storm drains near their property to prevent flooding during heavy rains.
Remember that if you do not have power, a cordless phone will not work. Use a corded, plug in telephone to make and receive calls.
