GREENBURGH K-1st grader's rock during honey bee (spelling bee) contest
Release Date: March 13, 2013

Judge Walter Rivera, Police Chief Joseph DeCarlo and  I were Judges in the Honey Bees (spelling bee)  competition for kindergarten and 1st grade students this morning at the Lee F. Jackson School.  We were all amazed at how smart the students were. The students were competitive. Some of the children cried after they lost but the losers (and winners) were cheered by their parents, teachers and attendees. Just competing makes one a winner!  The Theodore Young Community Center is sponsoring a spelling bee competition at the scool (oops-my own spelling mistake-meant school). The goal: to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.

This year older students will be participating in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This is the nation's largest, longest running, educational promotion, administered by EW Scripps Company. Nearly 250 sponsors from the US, Europe, Guam, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, Bahamas and American Samoa will send their finalist to Washington DC to compete in the 2013 national spelling bee contest.  The national competition will be held on May 28 to May 30th and will be broadcast on ESPN live May 30 at 10 AM and at 8 PM that day on ABC. A Greenburgh finalist will be selected tonight!

At 5-6:30 PM the school district and TDYCC will hold other competitions for older children: 2nd and 3rd grade students (Worker Bees). And, Bumblee Bees will compete (4th to 8 grade students) from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. The older kids  will compete at RJ Bailey Elementary School at 33 W Hillside Ave, White Plains.   I hope other school districts within Greenburgh will also consider sponsoring similar contests. It was lots of fun.

Hillary Greenberg and her husband Bill, who resides in Edgemont, will be featured on the Anderson Cooper show tomorrow, Thursday airing at 12 noon on Fox TV 5-  for the New York region. They will tell an important story of how Bill saved Hillary's life, using CPR.
