UPDATE --efforts to name Tappan Zee bridge for Pete Seeger  (10,575 people have signed petition supporting proposal)
Shortly after Pete Seeger passed away I proposed that the Tappan Zee bridge be named for Pete Seeger. Two Pete Seeger admirers, independent of me, created  separate on line petitions on change.org. supporting the name change. One of the petitions had collected 9056 signatures by Sunday afternoon. The other: 1519 signatures. Pete Seeger's family also supports the naming of the bridge for Pete---who was among the first to fight for a cleaner river. Pete Seeger was a terrific grass roots activist. The petition/name change effort is an unorganized grass roots effort --more people are signing on daily.
Another suggestion: An outdoor museum along the bikeway/walking path that will be built on the new Tappan Zee bridge. Historical markers could be placed along the bridge walkway highlighting the history of the Hudson River cleanup. the markers could honor Pete Seeger's contributions and the contributions of many others: former Congressmen Richard Ottinger, Ogden Reid, Riverkeeper, Clearwater. The outdoor museum/markers could also include a call for action --encouraging people to take specific action steps that could make the Hudson River even cleaner in the future.
