WORKSHOP: HOW TO RESPOND TO EMERGENCIES—TOWN HALL JAN 27…
On Tuesday, January 27 at 7 PM the Red Cross, collaborating with New York State, will offer a workshop on how to prepare for, respond to and recover from a natural or man-made emergency.  Community resources can become scarce when disaster strikes; the more citizens can care for themselves and their loved ones, the better and more quickly the community can return to smooth functioning.  Come learn from a trained Red Cross leader;  take home the beginnings of your own Emergency Go-Kit, a gift to each participant from the Red Cross.  Join us at 7 PM in the Auditorium of Town Hall at 177 Hillside Avenue in Greenburgh on January 27th.

CAN THE FIRE THAT DESTROYED AN AVALON APARTMENT COMPLEX HAPPEN IN GREENBURGH?  …FROM THE BUILDING INSPECTOR, JOHN LUCIDO
The fire in Edgewater can happen anywhere.  In this case, plumbers using a torch initiated the fire.  It appears the fire started in the attic space and raged across the building them began creeping down to the lower floors.  I was asked in a Journal News interview appearing in today's paper if this could happen here in Greenburgh's Avalon.  The answer is yes.  The NYS Code division has jurisdiction in approving construction materials that all governments outside of New York City are bound to approve for development.  As such, truss-roof construction, Laminated Strand Lumber (LVL) and Glulam Beams, all lightweight construction methods, are permitted and widely used not only in commercial construction but a majority of single-family homes are constructed with some or all of these materials.  The advantages are they are lightweight and easier to work with, more cost effective and provide more than adequate strength and stability in supporting loads.  The disadvantages are the thin dimensions of supporting members and the glue involved in the fabrication.  These factors cause fire to spread more quickly than dimensional lumber and at a much more intense temperature due to the glue component.  While there are pros and cons to this type of construction fire-protection groups have lobbied the State Code Council to make changes in the State Code limiting the use of such materials.  Although Greenburgh has an automatic fire-sprinkler law for all buildings, that alone would not have prevented this from happening given the way the fire was initiated.
