Fireworks July 18... NY STATE LEGISLATURE APPROVES HOTEL TAX -COULD GENERATE $$$
Release Date: June 27, 2015

FIREWORKS AT ANTHONY VETERAN PARK ON JULY 18..for the 3rd year in a row fireworks  will take place on Saturday July 18th beginning at 9 pm and the show should be completed in 20 minutes.  All the necessary safety precautions, permitting and notifications will take place.

The New York State Legislature approved a law that authorizes the town of Greenburgh to generate additional needed revenue by having a 3% hotel tax.  This tax could generate from non resident visitors to the town significant revenue--probably somewhere between $200,000-$500,000 a year. There are almost 2000 hotel rooms in town. The dollars we receive will be used to REDUCE your property tax bills and to comply with  the tax cap.

The town has been seeking permission to impose a hotel tax since at least 2009. The New York State Legislature had previously authorized New Rochelle, White Plains, Rye and 43 counties in NYS to have the tax--but not Greenburgh. 46.5% of the counties that had previously been granted permission to have a hotel tax by the state have smaller populations than the town of Greenburgh.  We argued that NYS was not treating Greenburgh fairly.

The villages of Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Hastings, Irvington and Tarrytown as well as villages within the Town of Mount Pleasant were also  granted permission to adopt a hotel tax this week by the legislature.

The Town Board expresses our appreciation to our two State Legislators, State Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins and Assemblyman Tom Abinanti for being effective advocates for the town. It's great to see NYS, town and village officials working so cooperatively!   They worked very hard to help the town and we thank them.  The legislation now goes to the Governor. Hopefully, Governor Andrew Cuomo will sign the legislation.

PAUL FEINER
