Westchester should follow NYC lead and test bike racks on buses...Bicycle Sunday
Release Date: September 07, 2015

WESTCHESTER COUNTY SHOULD  EXPLORE BIKE RACKS ON BUSES--MTA STARTED BIKE RACKS ON BUS PILOT PROGRAM THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND IN STATEN ISLAND AND BROOKLYN

For years I have been pushing Westchester County, Liberty Lines and NYC to place bike racks on buses. Bike racks on buses are used by transit systems around the world and around the United States.  Bike racks on buses would encourage cyclists to use public transportation on busy roads and to take their bicycles on back roads. It could reduce bicycle accidents and promote public transportation.

I am pleased that NYC is testing the bike racks on buses initiative in Staten Island and Brooklyn -beginning today. And, hope that the county of Westchester, Liberty bus lines will consider implementing the program in Westchester.

BICYCLE SUNDAY'S RESUME NEXT SUNDAY...

One of Westchester’s longest-running and beloved recreational programs – Bicycle Sundays – rolls on on select Sundays, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., despite roadway construction on the Bronx River Parkway.  I got my start in politics in the 1970s when I chaired the Task Force for Bikeways in Westchester and served on County Executive Al Del Bello's Bikeway Committee which recommended the closing of the Bronx River Parkway for cyclists on Sundays.
During Bicycle Sundays, a portion of the Bronx River Parkway is closed to cars for the exclusive use of bicyclists, joggers, walkers, scooters and strollers. The course runs from the Westchester County Center in White Plains, south to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers, a round-trip of 13.1 miles. There are many points of entry and exit along the way. Parking is available at the County Center lot in White Plains for a fee of $7.

Bicycle Sundays 2015 are:

September 13, 20 & 27

Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During Bicycle Sundays, the Bronx River Parkway is closed to vehicular traffic from Exit 22 at the Westchester County Center to Exit 4 at Scarsdale Road in Yonkers during these events.
