GREENBURGH ON LABOR DAY--HELPING THE UNEMPLOYED FIND WORK!
Release Date: September 07, 2015

GREENBURGH LABOR DAY REPORT

On Labor Day we think of jobs. The town of Greenburgh has been working hard to help the unemployed join the work force. Some of our initiatives:

Over six years ago I formed a Job Club that has helped members of the community find employment. Residents advise me of job openings in their place of work and I share the job opportunities with those who subscribe to a jobs e list at least weekly-- sometimes a few times a week.  If we hear of job opportunities from non residents, these job opportunities are also sent to those who subscribe to the list.  If you are out of work and want to have your name added to the jobs e list please let me know. Over 200 people have found jobs through this effort-probably more!

During the summer months I have  been working with the Greenburgh School district to create a new Greenburgh  Technology initiative at Woodlands High School.  Our goal is to create a program that gives students a demanding course of study that prepares them for 21st Century careers especially in high-wagehigh-demand positions including computer coding and programming, application development, network management and data analysis. We are in the process of finalizing details.

Another job creation initiative: The town and Greenburgh School district started an innovative architectural mentoring program, working with respected local Architects.  Students are eligible to receive $10,000 scholarships upon competition of the program.   The program started in January - with the first group of Woodlands students completing the first architect/mentoring program last June. The goal: to give students a head start on becoming architects/engineers.

A third job-training program is also in the planning stages: training hard-core unemployed to become painters. This initiative - a joint private/public partnership with the Theodore Young Community Center.

Our barber in training program -started last year at the Theodore Young Community Center has been successful in helping unemployed find employment. The barber in training program has been profiled nationally - in the Wall Street Journal, in USA TODAY and in many other media outlets.

Finally, we're working with bio tech companies like Regeneron and Acorda - making Greenburgh the bio tech capital of the Hudson Valley. The recently released third draft of the Comprehensive Plan which Councilman Francis Sheehan has been chairing, is identifying initiatives that will help us sound job creating businesses to our town.
