ANOTHER MAJOR PEDESTRIAN SAFETY ENHANCEMENT--RAPID FLASHING HIGH VISIBILITY CROSSWALK ON E HARTSDALE
Release Date: December 07, 2015

ANOTHER MAJOR PEDESTRIAN SAFETY ENHANCEMENT THAT THE TOWN JUST IMPLEMENTED—RAPID FLASHING HIGH VISIBILITY CROSSWALK ON E HARTSDALE AVE---WE’RE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE YOU SAFER!
In December of 2014 a pedestrian was struck and seriously injured in an accident on East Hartsdale Avenue in Hartsdale.  Police Chief Chris McNerney and members of the Town Board promised residents that we would look for ways to improve pedestrian safety on E Hartsdale Ave.   Last week  we were able to finish the installation of the new Rapid Flashing High Visibility Crosswalk Beacon in front of 140 East Hartsdale Avenue. It took a while, but this a great pedestrian safety improvement. It could not have been done without a team effort- Greenburgh Police, DPW and Radio Shop personnel.

We plan on handing out literature and speaking to the residents and commuters that utilize East Hartsdale Avenue this week, in our campaign to improve pedestrian safety.   I was driving on E Hartsdale Ave a number of times this  past week and am very excited about this new safety improvement. Speaking personally, the flashing lights at the crosswalk definitely caught my attention and  I slowed down. And, so did other drivers.    What other locations should we consider placing the flashing high visibility crosswalk beacon at?

The name of the company for the crosswalk is Carmanah, and the link to the unit is:
www.carmanah.com/traffic/crosswalks

The unit with all accessories (poles, sidewalk pad and electrical) totaled $6000. All installation was done by DPW and the Radio Shop.

This high visibility crosswalk is the most recent initiative we have taken to address pedestrian safety.  We placed stop signs on North and South Road (South Road had a fatal hit and run accident earlier this year). We have built or are close to building 1.6 miles of new sidewalks around town. And—plan more sidewalks next year!  And…we have purchased a digital speed sign that highlights the number of tickets issued on given streets during the week. We will take advantage of technology and plan additional safety enhancements next year.
