REMINDER-- TOWN HALL CLOSES ON DEC 24 AND DEC 31 AT 12:30 PM
Release Date: December 21, 2015

REMINDER—Town Hall closes on December 24th and December 31st at 12:30 PM. It’s been a policy for decades and it’s part of our contract with employees. We will be closed on December 25th and January 1st.

I plan to write to area hospitals urging them to consider doing what Lenox Hill Hospital has started doing - provide patients with videos after they are discharged from hospitals advising them of the aftercare procedures they should follow. Will help avoid mistakes. A great idea!  Patients are frequently stressed when they leave a hospital and don't recall what the doctor tells them to do. Being able to watch a video could help prevent setbacks.  I also think that the video should include information about support groups and even feature former patients who had successful outcomes after they experienced similar procedures/hospitalizations. It’s always nice to hear positive news about others who overcame similar medical problems –could reduce anxiety and help family members be more positive and upbeat!  Having a good attitude could help the recovery.
We are getting some great resumes from residents interested in joining our Health Care Advisory Committee. I will be forwarding this recommendation to them.   Would love to know what you think!

Earlier today I met with Greenburgh resident Jayne Cammisa, BSN, RN who is involved with the New York State Nurses Association.  She has asked the Greenburgh Town Board (and will be asking other municipalities in Westchester) to pass a resolution supporting NYS legislation to enact the safe staffing for quality care act.  The Journal of the American Medical Association recently published  research that associated a higher incident of patient deaths with a higher health care worker to patient ratios. According to the Nurses Association research found the odds of patient death increased by 7% for each additional patient the health care worker must care for at one time.   The Nurses Association and some State Lawmakers want all acute care facilities and nursing homes to meet standards for appropriate staffing ratios.
