During every snow storm or weather related emergency I post frequent updates. The goal: to keep you informed of action steps the town of Greenburgh, Con Ed, Westchester, NYS are taking to keep you safe. Feel free to contact me anytime during the duration of the storm. I asked the Commissioner of Public Works, Victor Carosi, to provide me with a report highlighting our preparations for the upcoming storm. 
Actually, we have been prepared for snow since November – we like to be prepared ahead of time.  Specific to this forecasted snow event, we have brined the streets as a first response, our salt shed has adequate supply for the storm, all our trucks (about 35 to 40 across all the various DPW divisions) are prepped and ready for action.  We are in contact with other emergency service operations (Con Edison, Westchester County and of course Greenburgh PD).

The exact timing of the storm keeps changing.  The latest information we have is trending toward very early Saturday morning for snow to start, with only 1 to 3 inches by morning, heavier snow through mid-day Saturday, and ending by Saturday evening with total accumulation of 7 to 13 inches.  As it is a coastal storm, the greater accumulations are trending closer to NYC.  We are told a change of 10 miles can make a significant change in the expected accumulation amounts.  

The Greenburgh Police monitor roadway conditions.  When they feel conditions are deteriorating, they alert our General Foreman, who then calls crews to work.  Generally the Highway Department will dispatch crews to first salt all the roadways during the first few inches of snowfall.  As the snow continues, we begin plowing when two to three inches of snow has accumulated on the streets.  Over the course of the storm, plow operators continue to plow the accumulating snow.  Each truck has an assigned route, so we can be sure all roads throughout the Town are addressed.  We do plow over 135 miles of road.  It can be several hours between passes, so we ask residents to please be patient.  All road are plowed, and we aim to have at least one pass of the plow on all roadways during the storm.  Once the accumulating snow stops, crews focus on pushing the snow completely off the road and onto the shoulders, and then follow with another salt application.

It is generally during this last plow operation that we encounter the most problems, as our job is to clear the roadway as close to the curb as possible.  Some residents may have already cleared their driveway and sidewalks.  Our responsibility is to make sure the roadways are cleared and safe. We do ask that residents do not make unnecessary trips, do not park your car in the street, and be aware of the Town plowing operations.  Also, when using a snow blower, direct the snow back onto your grassy areas, if plowing the driveway, don’t push the snow into the street - the DPW plows will just push that snow back. 

Sunday is looking to be milder than Saturday, with sunshine and temperatures forecasted 34 to 38.
