ARDSLEY AMERICAN LEGION ASKS FOR YOUR HELP SO ALL VETERANS CAN RECEIVE TAX EXEMPTIONS
The members of the Ardsley American Legion Post 458 urge veterans and other supporters  in the Town of Greenburgh to contact representatives in the New York State legislature to reform the alternative veterans property tax exemption so that that veterans everywhere throughout the state enjoy the benefit, not just some.

Because the original measure enacted two years ago left it in the hands of the school districts to approve, some school districts like Hastings-on-Hudson and Chappaqua approved it while others such as Ardsley and Scarsdale did not. The result is that about 50% of the vets in the state are enjoying some property tax relief while the other half is not.

The Ardsley American Legion Post 458 believes that only through an aggressive e-mail campaign targeted at state legislators by the vets and their supporters throughout the Town of Greenburgh and elsewhere in the state does this unfair measure stand a chance of being changed during the current legislative session. As you will see, the message below (which you can copy and paste into the body of an e-mail) not only sets forth the argument for change but presents one possible solution that Town Supervisor Paul Feiner suggested.

Here is our suggested Subject Line to get their attention:

E-Mail Message to Legislators (Copy and Paste into body of your e-mail):

The members of the Ardsley American Legion Post 458 are urging you and your colleagues in the New York State legislature in this session to reform the alternative veterans tax exemption so that veterans everywhere throughout the state can enjoy a little relief on their property taxes, not just 50% of us.

A major obstacle universal adoption of the law was noted two years ago by Timothy G. Kremer, Executive Director of the New York State Board School Boards Association (NYSSBA), which advocates having the state cover the veterans’ exemption rather than local taxpayers. On March 31, he stated: “The law, as is, presents school boards with a dilemma. If they adopt the exemption, it would increase taxes for other taxpayers in their district. If they do not adopt the exemption, they could be viewed as not being supportive of veterans.”
One way of correcting the measure, suggested by Town of Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner, is that New York State exempt the additional revenue losses from the veterans exemption from the school boards’ tax cap calculations. That might prove to be an incentive for school districts not to overrule the tax cap in order to assure getting refund checks from the state—a win-win for both the districts and the vets.

As you well know, the alternative veterans property tax exemption is not the first time a well-intended piece of legislation missed the mark, either at the local, town, county, state or federal level. Given how quickly this measure was approved and resulted in glaring disparities, you have it in your power to help correct it as soon as possible. We ask that you make reform of the alternative veterans property exemption a top priority, one that will be submitted for the Governor's signature before the session ends in late May.

I look forward to learning how you plan to assure that every veteran in the state will be able to enjoy a small break on property taxes, starting this year.
Sincerely,

THANKS
Paul Feiner
