CONGRATULATIONS TO JUNIPER HILL CIVIC ASSOCIATION LEADER SETH ZUIHO SEGALL ON BEING INDUCTED AS A ZEN BUDDHIST PRIEST

Dr. Seth Zuiho Segall will be  ordained as a novice Zen Buddhist priest on March 19th at 1:00 PM in a ceremony at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in White Plains. Dr. Segall is affiliated with White Plains Zen which meets at St. Bartholomew’s Church every Tuesday night.

Dr. Segall, a community activist,  holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, teaches at SUNY-Purchase, and is the science writer for theMindfulness Research Monthly. He is the former Director of Psychology at Waterbury Hospital and served on the clinical faculty of the Yale School of Medicine for thirty years. He also served on the Greenburgh Climate Action Task Force and presently serves on the boards of the Juniper Hill Civic Association and the Fairview Fire District Monitors.

Dr. Segall has practiced Buddhism for the past twenty years and had been preparing for ordination for the past two years. He is the author ofEncountering Buddhism: Western Psychology and Buddhist Teachings published by SUNY Press in 2003. He has written over 100 essays on Buddhist topics for his blog,The Existential Buddhist (www.existentialbuddhist.com) which are read the world over. The decision to ordain grew out of his love of Buddhist teachings and practice, and a desire to help shape the future of American Buddhist practice.

The role of the American Zen priest is an evolving one which includes serving as a resource on ritual and liturgy and as an officiant for rites of passage, with additional roles in pastoral counseling, chaplaincy, social justice, and interfaith collaboration. Dr. Segall views it as a vehicle for both deepening his personal spiritual practice and offering himself for service to others.

Congratulations on this accomplishment. And a big thank you to Dr. Segall for making a big positive difference in our community.  And for devoting his life trying to make the world a better place.

PAUL FEINER
