Bicycling could be a dangerous activity. A few weeks ago there were two bicycle related fatalities in NYC. Over the years Greenburgh residents also lost their lives in bicycle related fatalities. I have suggested that Westchester County & NYC  place bike racks on buses (similar to what other communities in the nation already do) so that bicyclists can use public transportation on busy roads and then take their bicycle to back roads.

The police department provides bicycle safety tips to students and groups. If you are interested in having the police conduct a bicycle safety event in your neighborhood please advise.

Photos and a summary of the event at the Greenville Elementary School is below.

Information for the June 16, 2017 Bicycle  Safety Event.

The Town of Greenburgh Police Department on Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Greenville Elementary School offered students tips for safe bicycle riding, pedestrian safety and stranger dangers.

Our police department emphasized the need for bicyclist to use bicycle helmets when riding.

Bicycling is a common means of transportation as well as an increasingly popular source of recreation, exercise, and sport.

But along with increased use of bicycles comes the risk of significant injuries. Injuries attributable to bicycling range from common abrasions, cuts, and bruises to broken bones, internal injuries, head trauma, and even death.

We suggest bicyclist wear a helmet, it is the single most effective safety device available to reduce head injury and death from bicycle crashes. Also we want to make sure the helmet fits and your child knows how to put it on correctly. A helmet should sit on top of the head in a level position, and should not rock forward, backward or side to side. The helmet straps must always be buckled, but not too tight.

Working together and having a discussion about the traffic rules will provide for safe travels in our community. Because we all share the same road, obeying the rules of the road allow for an enjoyable and safe ride for both bicyclists and motorists.
