Major new sidewalk construction starting Wed on Benedict
Release Date: October 15, 2017

New sidewalk on Benedict -construction starts Wed...town one of six communities in northeast to receive highest safety award from AAA

Please note that sidewalk construction along Benedict Avenue will begin Wednesday October, 18th and weather permitting, is expected to last 2-3 weeks. The new sidewalk (total 2,200 linear feet) will extend from Maple Avenue in the Town of Greenburgh to the entrance of “the Castle” in the Village of Tarrytown. Minimal lane closures are expected. This new sidewalk will fill an important gap along Benedict Avenue and is a continuation of recent sidewalks in the area. In the last 4 years, and including this new sidewalk, almost 1 mile of sidewalk along Rt. 119 in front of the Brightview Assisted Living Facility up to the Castle will have been built in connection with related Town Board and Planning Board site plan approvals. Town of Greenburgh DPW crews recently shifted the center lane location along Benedict Avenue to ensure that the sidewalk will have ample space and extend unobstructed along the south side of Benedict Avenue for its duration.  This sidewalk is not being paid for with taxpayer dollars.

MORE GOOD NEWS  HONORED BY AAA NORTHEAST WITH THEIR HIGHEST TRAFFIC SAFETY AWARD
Greenburgh recently was among six communities that received the AAA northeast’s highest award for traffic safety: their platinum award. They credited our new sidewalks, refurbishing over 200 curb ramps. Deploying portable digital speed displays to alert drivers to their speed.  We were credited with being one of the leading agencies regarding the volume of child passenger seats checked on a monthly basis (we average 60-70 seat inspections each month).  We were praised for an initiative we started in the fall of 2016—we distribute reflective arm bands and belts to assist pedestrians while walking during lowlight hours. These reflective arms bands are distributed by police officers working evening tours and encourage pedestrians to wear more reflective clothing.  We also organized a successful motorcycle safety awareness event in the spring –designed to encourage motorcyclists and motorists to drive safer.
Other communities that received this prestigious award were Garden City, Long Beach, Lynbrook, NYC and White Plains.
We will continue to work hard to make Greenburgh a safer place to live and work. New sidewalks will be built and traffic safety initiatives implemented.
PAUL FEINER
