Pollinator Week is June 17-23

The New York State Departments of Environmental Conservation and Agriculture and Markets announced the commemoration of National Pollinator Week, June 17-23, after Governor Andrew M. Cuomo issued a proclamation (PDF) affirming New York's commitment to promoting the health and recovery of the state's pollinator population. In addition, this week, New York State is celebrating Pollinator Week with several events highlighting the importance of key pollinator species such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Inaugural Buffer in a Bag Participants Plant 12,000+ Seedlings

12,150 trees and shrubs will be planted this year thanks to Buffer in a Bag participants across NY! Through DEC's Buffer in a Bag initiative, landowners can receive free tree and shrub seedlings to plant streamside. These "buffers" will help prevent erosion and improve water quality over time.

Each bag of 25 seedlings contains a variety of native species provided by DEC's Tree Nursery that are tailored to the recipient's region. To qualify, landowners must have 50 feet or more of property bordering water. The 2019 application period for Buffer in a Bag is now closed, but you can learn more about this annual program on our website.

Landscape Smart - Avoid Mulch Volcanoes

Mulch can be a lifesaver for a newly-planted tree. It not only helps retain water to keep a tree's roots moist, but it also gives you the gardener a head start in weed prevention by smothering many potential weed competitors. Because of the wonders of mulch however, many gardeners can be easily lured into thinking “the more mulch, the merrier”, leading to one of the most common landscaping mistakes – the mulch volcano.

Mulch volcanoes are created when mulch is piled high against the trunk of the tree. The insulation power of mulch can backfire when too much is applied, leading to decay, pest damage, or even death of the tree. Instead, keep mulch away from the trunk of the tree, and keep the surrounding mulch to a maximum depth of 3-4 inches. For more tree care tips, visit the Arbor Day Foundation website.
