Gas prices are headed higher again, already past the three dollar a gallon mark just before the summer driving season. Are there safe and inexpensive alternatives to fossil fuels in our future? One alternative being looked at is hydrogen. Will it work? Is it safe? Will it be cost effective for the average motorist?

The Greenburgh Nature Center is hosting a public information session on the issue of establishing a hydrogen fuel service station on Central Park Avenue in the Edgemont section of the town of Greenburgh.  The event will feature a presentation by Shell Hydrogen officials, followed by a panel discussion/question and answer session featuring representatives from Pace  Energy Center, The Earth Institute at Columbia University, New York State Environmental Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), and Greenburgh Chief of Police, John A. Kapica and Greenville Fire Chief  Dan Raftery. Westchester County legislators Lois Bronz and Tom Abinanti  are also scheduled to attend. Ms. Bronz is chair of the housing, planning and government operations committee, and Mr. Abinanti is chair of the legislature's environment and energy committee.

Shell Hydrogen proposes to establish a hydrogen refueling center and visitor/community learning center at 1000 Central Park Avenue. The station would be connected to a green power supply contract, and it would have equipment on site to convert water to hydrogen, meaning no added fuel deliveries would be required.

In addition to Shell’s description of the advantages of hydrogen-powered vehicles, a major portion of the presentation will focus on safety, science technology and development as well as environmental issues.  Space is limited and pre-registration is requested.  For further information, call 914-723-3470.
