Town secures $34,000 grant for youth programs
Release Date: September 06, 2007

I am thrilled to announce the Town has secured a $34,000 grant that will cover the cost of badly needed equipment for the Theodore D. Young Community Center’s FAST swim team, as well as providing funds for the Youth Empowerment Program-A Youth in Action Program.

Working closely with our Philanthropy Department, we secured this very generous grant from the Lanza Family Foundation. The foundation’s stated goal is to “help minorities overcome financial difficulties in order to achieve equal opportunities.”

The Fairview Aquatic Swim Team (FAST) began over 20 years ago at the Theodore D. Young Community Center and serves over 160 kids between the ages of 5-18. Being involved in FAST provides young men and women with an opportunity to participate in a professional and competitive swim club that provided significant health, educational and social benefits. Over 90 percent of FAST members have pursued higher education and become productive members of the community.

The grant will be used for a timing system scoreboard, which is crucial to the growth of the swim team and will enable them to better host swim meets.

As a testament to the Lanza Family Foundation’s commitment to our youth, the Town will honor the foundation by having its name permanently engraved and displayed on the scoreboard, which will be located in the pool area of the Theodore D. Young Community Center.

The Youth Empowerment Program-A Youth in Action Program will receive $5,000. This program introduces kids to basic business skills, customer service and leadership training and provides exposure to social, cultural activities and sporting events. This program encourages global knowledge and builds unity in the community.

This grant will be used to provide college tours, as well as trips to various museums and other campus highlights.

On behalf of the Town Board, the FAST members, and all the residents of Greenburgh, I would like to thank the Lanza Family Foundation for its generosity. The scoreboard, as well as the grant for the Youth Empowerment Program-A Youth in Action Program, will be a constant reminder of the Town’s and the foundation’s commitment to the mental and physical wellness of our kids now and in the future.
