CITIZEN IDEA OF THE WEEK HOME COMPOSTING/ON SITE MULCHING
Release Date: March 21, 2010

Yesterday I pointed out that the town is starting to pick up debris from the storms we have experienced in recent weeks. I also mentioned that it's going to take a long time since there is so much to pick up.
A citizen e mailed me with a great suggestion--on site mulch/home composting. Are any e list subscribers experienced with home composting/on site mulching? Volunteers could be enlisted to encourage others to help our environment.
Would you be interested in helping us encourage residents to lead by example and to home compost/on site mulch?
Let me know. I'll forward your name to residents who are interested in learning about this option.
This is what was e mailed to me.
PAUL FEINER

: Do you think any residents would be interested in on-site mulching/shredding at a fee, which would reduce the burden on the town to haul away so much debris?

Pros: reduced environmental impact via less hauling and reduced delivery of mulch (tis the season...); reduced costs to town of hauling and processing debris; cheap alternative to purchasing mulch

Cons: logistics; quality of mulch (i.e., which debris is appropriate?); push-back from businesses who sell mulch; potential for price gouging
