CABLE TV COMPETITION FINALLY COMING TO GREENBURGH
Release Date: October 22, 2004

I am pleased to advise that Alfreda Williams, Town Clerk and I just met with representatives of Verizon. They indicated  Verizon hopes to provide Greenburgh residents with cable TV competition in 2005. We invited them to make a presentation to the Town Board and to the community at our first meeting in November – Wednesday, November 10th at 7:15 PMat Town Hall.  They will be asking the Town Board to petition the Public Service Commission so that they can rapidly introduce competition to our community.

I have always advocated cable TV competition. Shortly after I assumed office as Town Supervisor I wrote to every cable TV provider in the nation inviting them to provide competition to our town. Many rejection letters!  No luck. At one point we came close --- Liberty Cable TV was prepared to offer competition. But, they later got cold feet.

The benefits are obvious: Customer service –with competition (CABLEVISION & VERIZON) should go up. The frequent rate increases we all complain about should be less frequent. You will continue to have the benefits of being able to watch public access TV if you subscribe to Verizon or Cablevision. The town will receive franchise dollars from both Cablevision and Verizon.

In addition, Verizon plans to deliver high bandwidth internet, voice and data services to Greenburgh residents – using their next generation technology to extend fiber all the way to residence and business premises.
