Woodlands High School is celebrating their 50th anniversary this weekend. And--to celebrate, there's a big High School reunion this weekend. The class of 1964 was the first graduating class at Woodlands. Attendees at the reunion include graduates of the classes of 1965 through 1969. I just left the high school, greeting the attendees and was impressed with the spirit in the room. Current seniors at Woodlands High School read comparisons of student life 50 years ago and today. The class of 1964 was the first graduating class but reunion organizers invited the classes 1965 through 1969 to help celebrate this memorable event. The dynamic issues of the Civil Rights era in the nation as a whole made the Greenburgh 7 school district and Woodlands High School fertile soil for students in those early years. Woodlands was among the first schools in the nation to actively move on the issue of desegregation with a dream of integration. Woodlnads High School alumni were the pioneers in that struggle sowing the seeds of that dream yet to be fulfilled. Fifty years later today’s students are walking in the same halls and attending the same classrooms as the graduates of those first years.
