Nor'easter update...road conditions... COYOTE INFO (what to do if you see a coyote
Release Date: March 02, 2018

Greenburgh nor'easter update:  Just got off the phone with the police chief, Chris McNerney.  Roads are slippery. 2 trees down.  The Greenburgh police have been responding to some accidents on highways.   Earlier today I received one report of a power outage. Have advised Con Ed.

I am planning to invite a representative of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to an upcoming  meeting of the Greenburgh Town Board to discuss NYS policies concerning coyotes. Earlier this week two coyotes killed a dog and injured some people in Hastings. According to news reports a Yonkers police officer shot one of the two coyotes. One of the attacks took place at Clarewood, in unincorporated Greenburgh.  We believe that the coyotes that were involved in the incidents were sick- and that their actions were not typical of behavior of most coyotes.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has very clear restrictions when dealing with wildlife. We are very limited with what we can do. We can euthanize a sick coyote, that's about it. We cannot remove a coyote as only licensed wildlife trappers are allowed to do so. The behavior must be  "bold", "aggressive" or "threatening".  LINK TO DEC website https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/6971.html

A few  years ago the Greenburgh Police department posted the following information about coyotes on the Greenburgh police website.

COYOTE INFORMATION

The Greenburgh Police Department recognizes the challenges presented by the potential interaction between coyotes, citizens, their children and pets. We offer the following information and links to assist our residents in identifying  these animals and making informed lifestyle decisions to avoid negative contacts with them.

Important Coyote Safety Tips from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation web page:

1.

Do not feed coyotes

2.

If you see a coyote, be aggressive in your behavior - make loud noises, wave your arms, throw sticks and stones.

3.

Do not allow pets to run free.

4.

Do not feed pets outside.

5.

Make any garbage inaccessible to coyotes and other animals.

6.

Eliminate availability of bird seed. Coyotes are attracted to the concentration of birds and rodents that come to feeders. If you do feed birds, clean up waste seed and spillage.

7.

Fencing your yard may deter coyotes. The fence should be tight to the ground, preferably extending six inches below ground level.

8.

Remove brush and tall grass from around your property to reduce protective cover for coyotes.

9.

Teach children to appreciate coyotes from a distance.

10.

Regulated hunting and trapping increases the "fear" coyotes have towards people.

11.

Ask your neighbors to follow these same steps.
