On Bicycle Sunday weekend a salute to Bob Hermann, head of Westchester cycling club
Release Date: May 05, 2018

Tomorrow is the first Sunday Bicycle Sunday for the year on the Bronx River Parkway from 10-2.  If you enjoy Bicycle Sunday's you might want to join the Westchester Cycling Club which organizes rides throughout the cycling season.  The President of the club is a Hartsdale resident - Bob Hermann.

In recent years, I've worked with Bob Hermann, a Hartsdale resident, on several cycling-related projects in which the Westchester Cycling Club, of which he's president, is involved. For example, we worked together on the extension of the South County Trailway that was opened last year; it begins on the north side of Tarrytown Road and eliminates the problem of Trailway riders having to venture north of 119 on Route 9A. WCC has many members in Greenburgh who are active in cycling and in advocating for safe cycling.

WCC is a sponsor of this week's Bike Sunday on the Bronx River Parkway. The club will have a table at the north end of the BRP right at the County Center end point. It's there to help cyclists that day, to lead some rides and to explain what the club does. Feel free to stop by, and talk to and ride with some of WCC's members then.

The club offers their members the opportunity to participate in rides every week. The membership fee is very reasonable $30 and entitles members to join other cyclists on a ride that they will enjoy. There are rides for fast cyclists. And other rides for those who are slower and don't want to cycle long distances. Many of the rides are along scenic backroads.  https://westchestercycleclub.org/

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are you guys?

Recreational bicyclists who ride in Westchester, Putnam and sometimes Rockland and Dutchess counties in New York State, north of New York City. Most of our members are from New York City, Westchester and Putnam.

What kind of rides do you do?

All. Sometimes even on dirt. The club has a ride category system: A to D for road rides plus HP for rides with a lot of hardpack roads, and M for mountain bike rides. We try to schedule a ride at every level every Saturday and Sunday, sometimes more than one as long as the start locations are far apart. We also often schedule rides during the week. For anyone new to the club or thinking about joining, we offer Orientation rides.

During the season, we also have casual rides - flings, we call them - that start and end at the same location every Wednesday and Friday. On special occasions, we have multi-level rides tied to events like the Cinco de Velo first weekend in May. Look at the Ride Categories page for more info.

Do you race?

No. Some of us ride really, really fast and it may look like we're racing but we're not.

How do I know which ride level to go on?

There are a couple of ways. Take your cycle computer on your next ride and when you get home, note your mileage and average speed. Then look at the ride level descriptions on the bottom of the Ride Schedule page. Please note that the speeds listed are averages; a B ride may average 15 miles per hour, but there will be parts where you're going 35 mph and parts where you are giving it all to do 3 mph. It's best to underestimate; nobody likes getting dropped.

You can also contact the New Members committee to talk about your riding skill and level. Go on one of the Orientation rides and talk to the ride leader.  Also, review the New Members page and the Ride Categories.

What does it cost to join?

Dues are $30 per household per year.

I'm really cheap. Can I go on club rides without paying dues?

Guests are welcome on club rides. Contact the ride leader by phone for meet up location; only members can access ride start locations on the website.

What do I get for being a member?
  • Access to MyWCC
  • Free turn-by-turn navigation on your smart phone, using RideWithGPS, for many cue sheets posted on the WCC website.
  • Ride reminders
  • The monthly newsletter - Plain Spoke'n, delivered electronically, of course!
  • Access to the Cue Sheet Library on MyWCC
  • Discounts at local Bike Shops
  • And may other things, like meeting like-minded, friendly cyclists
What's so great about MyWCC?

MyWCC is the club's interactive membership system. MyWCC includes the ride schedule, events calendar, newsletter distribition, member polls, cue sheet library, club photo album, club statistics, ride leader incentives and membership roster. In tech speak, MyWCC is a PHP/MySQL script written by Membership Director Bruce Wells and it rocks.

Where do the rides start and end?

Wherever the Ride Leader says. The most popular start location is SUNY Purchase, because it's centrally located, has plenty of parking and access to awesome roads.

What about meetings?

Yes, we have meetings. The Board of Directors meets once a month; if you'd like to attend, contact the club president. In the spring and fall, the Programs Director organizes Member Meetings, which are usually held at a restaurant and feature a presentation related to cycling. Look at the Events page for more information.

Can I Volunteer?

You sure can. Lead rides, organize events, write news, take photos - did I mention that we are all volunteers? Even me, the omniscient voice that is guiding you now.

Are my membership dues waived if I volunteer?

No.

How do I get one of those awesome ride jerseys?

You can earn it by leading rides. The club has an active incentive program which is described on the Ride Leader Information page. Or you can buy one from the Incentives Director. See the Gear page for more info.

What is the Golden Apple?

Every September, the club sponsors the Golden Apple, a self-paced tour of Westchester and Putnam Counties. We have marked routes of 25 to 125 miles and provide maps, food, rest stops, directions and other services to all riders. The Golden Apple represents the culmination of the cycling season, and many cyclists, members and non-members, come to challenge themselves and enjoy a fully supported ride. We have had over 1,200 cyclists participating. It's lots of fun for everyone involved.

What ages are club members?

Our members are all ages, but mostly reflect the demographics of Westchester County.  Riders under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult in order to ride with us.  You should print and bring this form to a ride if you are bringing minor.

How do I join?

Go to the Membership page for instructions on how to join.
