Postal Service investigating why mail dumped in garbage
Release Date: October 22, 2018

During the past five years I have complained a lot about postal service operations. The US Postal Service has responded by hiring a Westchester Postal Service manager who has been very helpful in resolving numerous specific complaints that have been forwarded to their attention. And, they replaced the Hartsdale Postmaster with another postmaster who also has been trying to personally address specific complaints.

The problems we have been experiencing (I continue to receive daily complaints from residents) are not unique to Greenburgh. Yesterday, News 12 reported that one of the postal service employees allegedly dumped mail in the woods.

One of the problems with the Postal Service is that they have replaced many full time employees with part timer's who are not familiar with routes or passionate about their jobs  --a reason why I have called on the Postal Service to provide local postmasters with the flexibility to hire local residents for neighborhood routes. Another problem: Five of the nine seats on the US Postal Service Board (the Board that oversees postal service operations) are vacant. And three of the four Board members are senior employees. There is no  citizen oversight of postal service operations.

I will be reaching out to members of Congress from our area and will be asking them to schedule public hearings and for the Senate and House of Representatives to investigate the reasons why the Postal Service are having so many problems. If we can't depend on the mail (checks, bills, prescription drugs are not being delivered to the right addresses and some days people don't get mail) there is a big problem. And, people will stop using the Postal Service. The US Postal Service must take steps to correct the problems before it is too late.
