Public hearing Wed at 7:30 PM to new assisted living facilities to offer 10% affordable units
Release Date: January 05, 2019

A number of new assisted living facilities are being proposed in Greenburgh and the rest of the county. These for profit facilities provide exceptional services to the elderly population. The problem: they are very expensive. Residents have reported paying upwards of $20,000 a month for basic services and extra's for family members. The base fee is usually in the $7,000-8,000 range but quickly adds up when residents require additional services.

The Greenburgh Town Board will be holding a public hearing on Wednesday night to require 10% of new assisted living facilities being developed in the town to be affordable and to meet Westchester County affordable housing guidelines. The proposed law would not apply to existing assisted living facilities (we can't legally take that action).

I am forming a task force that will also press Westchester, Albany and Washington to address the problem--of lack of affordable assisted living facilities. Our population is growing older and the middle class deserve a place to get the care they need with dignity.  How many people do you know who can afford $8,000, $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000 a month?  If you'd like to join the task force please e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com

If you would like to highlight your personal experiences or make other recommendations to the Town Board about this matter--the hearing begins at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, January 9th at Greenburgh Town Hall.  Am also interested in finding out what other communities around the nation are doing.
