SOME EXCITING NEW IDEAS--FOR 2007 AND BEYOND...(BUSINESS CAMP/CHILDRENS GARDEN)
Release Date: July 31, 2006

SUMMER BUSINESS CAMP –WALL STREET101

For over a decade the town has sponsored a police summer youth camp. This successful camp has provided teens with an opportunity to learn about policing and to interact with police officers. The town has very successful recreation camps for kids of all ages. We should consider doing what other communities are doing around the nation: establish a summer business camp/Wall Street 101.

An article in the Business Section of the NY TIMES  (July 30) “A Summer’s Sojjourn At Camp Tykoon-Tu-Bi” features a store about business camps for young people. I am reaching out to the members of the TheodoreYoungCommunity Center, Parks & Recreation Advisory Boards and will be urging the town to establish a similar camp next season. At some camps campers practice job interview skills, meet with local business people. They create a budget, they learn about paying off debt. At another camp a simulated trading room lets students try their hand buying and selling on world financial markets.

ANOTHER GREAT IDEA—A CHILDREN’S GARDEN AT HARTS BROOK NATURE PRESERVE IN HARTSDALE

Tony Russo and his wife Andrea Kish, 25 year residents of Irvington, are master gardeners. Andrea heads a volunteer effort at the Harts Brook Preserve in Hartsdale where a group of Master Gardener’s tend a 4000 square foot vegetable garden growing produce for the Samaritan House Women’s Shelter of Grace Church in White Plainsand other needy Westchesterresidents.

I recently took a tour of the garden at Harts Brook. As a result of our tour – we’re working on an exciting new initiative. A Children’s Garden at Harts Brook Nature Preserve. Children would have their own garden. Andrea and Tony are working on finding a location at Harts Brook for the children’s garden. I hope the children’s garden can open up in 2007.
