AFFORDABLE ASSISTED LIVING TASK FORCE TO MEET TOMORRROW AT 4 PM...LINK TO RADIO DISCUSSION ABOUT TOPIC

EDGEMONT KINDERGARTEN TEACHER HUSBAND PASSES AWAY WITHOUT LIFE INSURANCE - GO FUND ME PAGE STARTED

Earlier this year I formed a committee that is promoting affordable & safe assisted living facilities.  The cost of assisted living is very expensive --monthly rates at most facilities can start at $7 or $8000 a month and quickly escalate. I met a woman earlier this year whose mom was paying over $20,000 a month!. Many pay in the $12-$15,000 a month rate.  The Chelsea, a new assisted living facility that will open up at the former Frank's nursery on Dobbs Ferry Road in Greenburgh in the fall is offering Greenburgh residents discounts but the rates are still unaffordable for many. When Brightview opened a few years ago in the Tarrytown section of unincorporated Greenburgh they also offered Greenburgh residents discounts.

We are holding our next meeting at Greenburgh Town Hall this coming Thursday (tomorrow)  May 23rd at 4pm .  If you are interested in the issue and discussing legislative options please feel free to join us.

-Assemblywoman  Sandra Galef  advised that she will be attending.

-Senator Shelley  Mayer has sent an email saying she has a conflict but  will try to stop by.  She thanks us for our efforts on this issue.

-The link to the  radio interview with Laurie Racanelli, an expert on the subject and resident of Irvington is below:

Affordable assisted living is not an impossible dream.   See the link to an article about a developer who wants to build a 100% affordable assisted living facility in Mount Vernon. He met with our committee earlier this year.  And is open to the possibility of building an assisted living facility that would be 100% affordable for profit (paying taxes)  in Greenburgh or in surrounding areas if we could find him land.

Our population is aging. I believe that this issue will become a much bigger at the national, state and local levels in the future.

An amazing & well liked  Kindergarten teachers at Greenville Elementary, Mrs. Lillian Becker Younger,  had a tragedy. She lost her husband suddenly last weekend  (he was under 40 years old) and they have two young boys, ages three and five. Unfortunately, her husband didn’t purchase life insurance. Regardless, our community is trying to support her as best we can.

A community member has set up a gofundme page.
