WESTHELP SENIOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING UPDATE…COUNTY EXECUTIVE’S OFFICE, MARATHON DEVELOPER, SCHOOL DISTRICT, CIVIC ASSOCIATION ARE IN AGREEMENT BUT SOME TECHNICAL ISSUES STILL HAVE TO BE RESOLVED BEFORE COMPLEX IS CONVERTED TO SENIOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Over a year ago the town reached a conceptual  agreement with the Mayfair Knollwood civic association, Valhalla School district and County Executive's  office to convert the former WESTHELP homeless shelter into 54 senior citizen affordable housing units.  The town has some legal rights to the property and will receive $600,000 once the property is turned over to Marathon. Since that time we have been in constant communication with the County Executive's office and with Mark Soja of Marathon development. Members of the Board of Legislators also agree: that the complex needs to be used to help our seniors who need senior housing that is affordable.  Everyone is working cooperatively –we all want the senior citizen housing to progress.

Serious construction has not yet started on the building since the conceptual agreement was reached over a year ago. The reasons: Mr. Soja mentioned that he needed a longer term lease which the County Executive’s office agreed to. If you watch the discussion with Mr. Soja (which is posted below) there is a  technical issue that still has to be resolved with the attorney’s –legal description of the access road.

I am hopeful that since the policy issues have been resolved that the lawyers will give this their highest priority attention so that  the County Executive will  be able to submit the proposal to the Board of Legislators for action.  Everyone agrees – we need the senior housing. We need to use the abandoned homeless shelter for affordable senior housing.  We have an affordable housing shortage in Westchester and it’s sad that a beautiful building continues to be abandoned.  Let’s make the seniors happy and provide them with a beautiful building to live in sooner-rather than later
