A DREAM COME TRUE--SEE HOW SPECTACULAR THE NEW BIKEPATH ON THE MARIO CUOMO BRIDGE WILL LOOK
Release Date: October 08, 2018

A DREAM COMING TRUE--BICYCLISTS WILL BE ABLE TO CYCLE ACROSS NEW MARIO CUOMO BRIDGE

Over 20 years I chaired a group called the Hudson Valley Regional Conference. We lobbied the chair of he NYS Thruway Authority to open the Tappan Zee bridge for cyclists one day a year --which they did! The Thruway Authority authorized the MS Society to sponsor a charity fundraiser for cyclists who wanted to bike across the bridge.   The bridge was packed with cyclists.

Around the time NYS was considering tearing down the old Tappan Zee bridge and replacing the bridge I suggested that the old bridge be preserved and turned into a high line for cyclists and pedestrians. There was a tremendous amount of support for the initiative but at the end of the day the bridge was demolished.

But, the new bridge is going to provide cyclists and joggers with almost everything many people  had hoped for ---a spectacular bike and jogging path with places to stop at (the bridge is three miles long!) and enjoy the spectacular scenery. It's very exciting.  See how the new bike path will look by clicking on to the news12 link below.

The soon to be built path is great news for cyclists and joggers who can't wait to make the bridge part of our exercise routine. It's also great for the local economy. Cyclists from around the world will be attracted to the bridge. It will become a world class destination point. They will shop at our local stores, stay in our local hotels. And -if they like what they see in Westchester, might be inclined to move to one of the communities within Greenburgh that is close to the bridge.  IT's a win, win for everyone.

Greenburgh is a great community for cyclists. We live near the Bronx River bike path (off the Bronx River Parkway), the South County Trail (off of the Saw Mill River Parkway). The Old Croton Aqueduct is a fantastic scenic dirt path along the Hudson river communities. Westchester County recently placed bike racks on some county buses. And Bicycle Sunday's has been around for over 40 years ---the parkway is closed for cyclists on Sunday's in the spring and early fall.   Nothing will compare- in my opinion to the new bridge path.

One suggestion: I have proposed, over the years, that because the bridge is so long (three miles) that an outdoor art exhibit/museum be established along the route --with art and exhibits highlighting the history of the environmental movement along the Hudson, information on sustainability, etc... Will provide cyclists who are tired with an excuse to stop and take a look at the exhibits.
